About Us

Explore Salmon Fishing:

Located on the west coast of Newfoundland, Explore Salmon Fishing is the largest outfitter on the island.  Our main lodge is nestled in the coastal mountains next to the Bay Of Islands on the Humber River.  We also have a wilderness lodge located on the Upper Humber River.  Located in the middle of the west coast of Newfoundland has some great advantages like having fifteen scheduled salmon rivers within two hours of us in any direction.  The Humber River is protected from high winds and natural shade provides gray light in the mornings and evenings providing ideal fishing conditions for a longer day on the river.  As the largest outfitter we have a large selection of gear to provide our clients with a high level of comfort and the ability to get anywhere.

Catch Rates:

As any experienced fisherman knows, success in fishing of any kind is subject to weather conditions and any change to water conditions due to the weather.  This is not usually a problem on the Lower Humber.  The weather in the Humber valley during the months of July and August is fairly stable and this keeps the water conditions stable.  The Lower Humber is also blessed because its source is a large deep lake called Deer Lake, which is feed by the Upper Humber.  The water that runs out of the lake is cool and this is great for the fly fishing. Optimal temperatures for Atlantic salmon are between 57 and 64 degrees F and the temp. of the water on the lower Humber rarely exceeds 65 degrees F. The only thing that can warm the water more than that is, a month of Hot, Hot weather with no rain. this doesn’t happen often in Newfoundland.

Our Guides:

Explore Newfoundland Fishing is dedicated to providing the best service   possible to our clients .  Our guides have been carefully selected based on, experience, knowledge of fishing, strict safety regulations, there ability to give instruction if needed, and their knowledge of the local culture and history.  Also we expect our guides to have good communication and interpretation skills, so they are able to answer any questions you may have about our surrounding area, be it questions about geology, plant  life in the area, or details on the life of Atlantic Salmon.  The most important skill they must have, is the ability to put clients on the fish.

June Fishing:

The month of June in Newfoundland marks the official end to the long winter for most fly fishermen. The salmon are back in the rivers and we can’t wait to get out and wet a line.

July Fishing:

July is the best time to fish on the Humber River.  On the upper Humber the waters are teaming with fish.  We offer day long rafting or wading trips where we travel from the main lodge on the lower Humber each day.

August Fishing:

The Lower Humber is supplied with water from Deer Lake, a deep cold lake.  This provides the Lower Humber with a supply of cold heavily oxygenated water when many rivers in our region have warm up or been closed.  This puts us in the perfect location to put you on more fish and big fish!

September Fishing:

September fishing in our province is catch and release.  The Lower Humber is one of a few rivers in the province that you can take part in this fishery.  The big fish are in there lays and we can put you on them.  Catch rates are lower but if you are looking to play a trophy Salmon this is the best time.  Our fall fishery normally yields only 30lb to 50lb fish but an occasional 20lb fish.
